The Man Behind "WOP," Emerging Superstar J. Dash

It’s alright to own up to it. You’ve secretly been “wopping” behind closed doors haven’t you? The dance is reaching fever pitch thanks to emerging music sensation J. Dash whose debut single, “WOP” is well on its way to becoming a Gold record. Look for the entire album, “Tabloid Truth,” due out January 31st exclusively at Wal-Mart, download “WOP” on iTunes or Zune, and watch the “WOP” video, featuring Mr. Dash’s friend and multi-platinum selling rapper Flo Rida. But first, catch our interview below with the oh-so-talented rapper himself, J. Dash!

Congratulations on the huge success of “WOP”! Where did the idea originate? The Wop idea originated back in Gainesville, Florida when I was in school, me and a couple of friends used to do the dance all the time to other people’s music but we didn’t have our own song for it, so I went back to my dorm and made the song, gave it to some DJs and it took off organically from there.

What can we expect from the rest of your album, “Tabloid Truth?” “Tabloid Truth” is a journey through life. We have some fun records and dance records, but also some records with a deeper message. Overall, I’m about staying positive; the album is a positive expression of life itself, the ups and downs. I’m hoping it will be able to touch people and get them through things, it’s not just about dance records.

Few people know you’re a classically trained pianist. Has that influenced your current sound? Yes absolutely. It’s always helpful to know how to play an instrument when you’re making music but having the classical background puts a different twist on my music. I also have a blues and jazz background as well, it’s good to be diverse, to bring different things to the table.

So who do you listen to? Just recently I was listening Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Camp Lo, Mobb Deep, Pantera, Green Day, Digable Planets, Bach…and my album of course! So it’s definitely all over the place!

It seems you’re rarely photographed without glasses, whether geek-chic or shades. Would you consider glasses part of your trademark style? Style-wise, what else are you drawn to? Yeah I like glasses. I like framing in general. I have different color eyes and I think it’s easier to be drawn into them when you have something that frames them. Call it my vanity but that’s what I like to highlight!

As far as other style aspects, I’m drawn to jackets but it’s unfortunate because I live in Florida! I’m buying all these jackets but it’s too hot to wear them so I’m looking to traveling to cooler places. I’m also into different types of watches.

And on the ladies?  I like form-fitting clothing, I like stripes and I like accessories on women.

With that being said, single or spoken-for? I am spoken for right now.

Who inspires you, both professionally and personally?  Honestly the people that I meet every day inspire me. Of course the musicians and the music I listen to inspire me, but living life in general is the hugest inspiration for me and communicating with people keeps me going on a daily basis!

Two things you couldn’t go without during your day? Probably my iPhone and talking to my daughter. Not necessarily in that order.

What is one thing about J. Dash that might surprise us? Who knew I knew so much about fashion!??!
