You've lived and traveled all over the world. Do those
different cultures influence your pieces?
I love to travel and experience new places and cultures. I find that I
get a lot of inspiration from my travels. Just seeing the architecture
in the Far East and Mediterranean and the colors used in the traditional
garb helps focus my creativity away from the traditional. Many times
when I travel I go for day trips to rain forests beaches and local
villages. I find that a lot of my jewelry designs are inspired by the
beautiful nature and cultures from abroad.
Most of your pieces have very defined
shapes-especially circles. Is that deliberate?
The truth is I love squares and defined angles. I find that circles and
curved shapes are more popular. I always theorize that people like the
symbolism behind circles.
Is there a personal favorite in your collection?
There are always pieces that I love more or less. I think
my favorite piece is the necklace I designed for a trade competition. It
was the start of the Meira T signature the asymmetrical charms going up
the right side of the chain. From that necklace onward many of my
necklaces have the Meira T signature look with the charms and I believe
that’s what makes my jewelry so versatile, trendy and unique.
Consumers just see the finished end result, but I’m sure
you encounter a few frustrating aspects when creating your
pieces...what are those frustrations?
I find the most difficult thing is to have innovating new
concepts and not repeat the designs I have done in the past. I always
want my collections to be different and ahead of the fashion game. I
work very hard to come up with new concepts and styles. The other thing that
I find challenging is the mechanics of the jewelry. Every design is worn
in our office to look for any “ mechanical errors” twisting flipping
laying incorrectly. Many times it’s difficult to create what I see in my
head and make it work with women’s bodies, gravity and physics. People
don’t realize that we as designers need to create a prototype that will
sit beautifully on every body, ring, ear and wrist type. The other
thing that frustrates me is the increasing prices of my raw materials. I
am very price conscious. I want my jewelry to be a “self purchase” by
women themselves as opposed to jewelry that needs to be purchased by
someone else or for an occasion.
Some women shy away from a standout accessory, yet your
designs seem to stand out in a delicate manner. How do you
achieve that?
I design pieces that I would wear. My philosophy is that
because I am a woman I understand the needs women have when it comes to
accessorizing their wardrobe. My jewelry transitions easily from day
wear to eveningwear. My designs are not special occasion or
evening gala pieces that can be worn for the evening only and then taken
off. The same jewelry can be worn with jeans and a t-shirt and for a
dinner party or evening out.
Any advice you can offer women on wearing your designs, for
example, how to wear them, what to pair them with, etc.
I don’t like matching sets. I think that as long as you are
working with the same textures and styles jewelry does not have to
“match”. It should blend. We sell a lot of bangles and we see women
mixing and matching gold colors and gemstones. The fashion now is free
and effortless and my jewelry holds to that fashion. Like I said
earlier my jewelry transitions well from the jeans to the cocktail dress
and its all within a “budget.”
