This
is such a great concept...how did you come up with it?
The reason I started promom was to deliver a message. I felt so
passionate that the "mommy wars" was absurd! I wanted moms to feel
comfortable to define motherhood however they saw fit....by what felt
right to them. It does not matter if a mother is a doctor,
mechanic, engineer, PTO President, school crossing guard, CEO, carpool
mom, etc. Whether a mom works inside the home or outside the home
or, for pay or not for pay…what matters is that we celebrate each and
every mother. Different styles for each and every
mom, that is how promom couture emerged.
Did you give up a different career path to pursue the
promom couture dream?
I am actually a recovering attorney. I don’t really
consider myself having given that up (although my parents might disagree
with that, you know…”my daughter the lawyer…”) as I had stopped working
as an attorney before promom and had taken on a number of volunteer
professions when the children were younger: PTA President, Room Mom,
Team Mom, House Mom, Laundry Mom, Walk and feed the Doggies Mom, etc.
My promom couture dream was born out of my having been a “working mom”
and a “stay at home mom” (UGH, I hate those terms as EVERY mother is a
working professional.) I never fit into one label or
the other; however, “promom” seemed to fit like an
Audrey Hepburn black glove.
Is there a tee your especially fond of from
promom?
I love the “peaceandloveforevermom” tee as it seems to have universal
appeal. I’ve had women purchase it who are not
moms because they LOVE the design, the message and they love their mom.
How awesome is that? I’ve also received emails about that design
asking that I take out the “mom” in it so that women who are not mothers
can wear it. “Sorry, promom is about celebrating motherhood with
style…the mom stays!”
Tell us how you feel when you see a celebrity donning
something from your line.
When Cindy Crawford appeared on Oprah showing a stack of our tees as
some of her favs, that was pretty amazing. I’m also amazed
when I’m at the airport or in another city and see our tees on moms.
It’s happiness and pride all rolled up into a great feeling. It
means that our message is resonating across the country and that is my
goal. When a celeb wears our tees it tends to help spread the
promom celebration like wildfire, that’s always cool.
When we received a personal note from First Lady Michelle Obama about
her tees, I thought that I would faint right then! I
showed that note to everyone that I came into contact with that day.
The Starbucks “barrista,” the postal carrier, the grocery store checkout
person, everyone!!! (No invitation to visit the White House yet.)
Do you have any items in your own closet your particularly
fond of?

What about favorite designers? I have chocolate Chanel clogs that
are my favorite!! I just had them resoled so that I can whip them
out again next Fall. I like classic items mixed with a simple GAP
or Target piece. I adore Tory Burch, Burberry, Hermes scarves and
Prada. Given the tighter budgets these days, there’s more GAP and
Target going on than there is Prada.
What do you think is important for moms to know about
fashion?
Put together a style that makes you comfortable. If you want to
wear a vintage piece, go for it and mix it with a current jean or skirt.
I’m all about pulling together a unique look that makes a statement
about who you are. Don’t blend in, you’re a mom…you’re hip, cool,
sexy, vibrant and you should show it off! (However, please do not
let us see your thong peeking out from the top of your jeans…it
embarrasses your children and it’s just not stylish.)
