Getting Real with Basketball Wives Star Jennifer Williams

You may know her as one of the outspoken members of VH1’s hit show Basketball Wives, but how well do you really know Jennifer Williams?  Ms. Williams, who recently split from former NBA player Eric Williams, is way beyond just a reality TV star and below dishes to 24-7 Style of course on the trials and tribulations of BBW, but also her style, and her entrepreneurial endeavors as well.  A woman going after her dreams – nothing short of inspiring!

Basketball Wives is one of those shows that shamelessly reels us in and before we know it, we’re hooked!  In your wildest dreams, did you ever imagine starring in a reality show?  If you asked me five years ago would I be doing a reality show, I definitely would have said absolutely NOT! However, I love the show and am very happy to be involved with it.

Do you feel BBW has shown an accurate depiction of the “real” Jennifer?  I feel BBW has shown an accurate depiction of me however it just shows a small fraction of the person I really am.  I have several businesses that I am involved with but you don’t get to see as much of that side of me.

Do you ever watch any of the episodes and think “Hmmm…maybe should have handled that a little differently,” and if so, how do you handle those “OOPS!” moments?  It is hard to deal with "Oops" moments when it is captured on film but I try to be on my p's and q's when filming.  I think you just have to have a tough skin when you are on a reality show because everyone is going to have an opinion.

You’re right, everyone does have an opinion which brings us to the topic of breakups.  They’re hard enough to get through without the press complicating matters and putting their “two cents” in.  How do you publicly get through it – the anger, the grief, the craziness, without coming across as though you’ve “lost it?”  A breakup is definitely hard no matter how you look at it.  I think you just have to be true to yourself and I think it is important for both parties to have a mutual respect when discussing the matter in public.

You’ve obviously not “lost it,” and in fact your success is mounting.  What advice do you have for other women going through something similar?  For me I threw myself into my business and it kept me occupied.  I would advise other women dealing with something similar to process your emotions first and then find something you enjoy doing and make it a distraction like a hobby or going back to school.  Anything to make you a better person!  You definitely have to mourn but then you have to pick yourself up and move forward!

You’ve moved forward with exciting business ventures and projects galore.  How did your involvement with Flirty Girl Fitness evolve?  I started going to FGF in Toronto when they had just opened.  I always went with some other NBA wives from the Raptors when Eric was playing there at the time.  We just loved how much fun we had and how cute and girly the place was.  So we decided to invest in the company and bring it to the USA.  Now we have two locations in Chicago and Toronto with plans to expand throughout the USA.  For more information check out FlirtyGirlFitness.com.

And what about your newest endeavor Lucid – a five-color lip gloss line?  Lucid is my baby.  I am watching it crawl right now and hopefully it will be running soon!  I decided to develop a lip gloss line because that is one beauty product I don't leave home without.  Lucid will be available very soon online at LucidCosmetics.com.

You’re also writing a handbook for women.  What can you tell us about it?   I am very excited about my handbook for women that will be published by Farrah Gray Publishing.  I have people asking me all the time what beauty products do I use, hair products, etc.  It is an all-around self-help book discussing self-esteem, love, hair, diet and exercise, wardrobe, etc.

Good stuff!  While on the subject of style, we can’t pass up hearing about yours.  What are some of the items and designers you gravitate towards?  I love fashion but I am all about mixing high end and low end.  Some of my favorites are DVF, Alice and Olivia, H&M and Zara.  I don't think you have to spend a fortune to look fabulous!

We do love our accessories at 24-7 Style – what are your favorite ways to complete a look?   Yes accessories are definitely key to completing any look.  I love big earrings!  And I am also getting into big bold necklaces but you can't wear big earrings with a bold necklace, it’s either one or the other.  Bangles are great to complete a look as well!

Finally, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?  The best piece of advice I was given is to stay in school because people can take your house, your car, your self-esteem but no one can take your education away from you.  You never know where life will take you but you will always have your education!  I pass that advice along as often as I can to young women.

Well said!  Remember to catch Jen and the rest of the Basketball Wives Mondays on VH1, 8/7c.
