Steal the Style: Beachy Waves Summer may be a distant memory, but that doesn't mean its favorite hairstyle has to be. The style that seemingly never goes out of style is beachy waves and although it appears effortless, unless you've actually been swimming in the seas, replicating it can prove to be mission impossible.
Not so say our hair-hero's below. Anyone can recreate what a little fun in the sun does naturally. 24-7 Style was lucky enough to have these industry insiders provide their fail-proof methods for the sexy windswept I-just-got-back-from-South-Beach hair we all want from time to time. With so many options, your bound to find one that becomes a just-right concoction of twisting and spritzing that leaves your tresses naturally "beachy."
One of the most sought after hair stylists and colorists in the world,Tracey Cunningham, of the Byron/Tracey salon in New York (whose clients include Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, and Jessica Biel) offers this advice: "curl hair with iron and lightly hairspray, then run a brush through the curls. Spray with Redken Wool Shake product to give the hair some loose texture and movement." Or, simply sleep with hair in a wrapped and twisted bun. Untwist in the morning and "ta-da...light beachy waves!"
Those of you with straight hair might find it a liii-ttle more difficult to create your waves. Lorali Kovach (Megan Fox is a fan) of Juan A Salon in Sherman Oaks, CA says to wash then dry hair just until it's left damp. Take small sections of hair and twist, "like when you see a cute boy," leaving them twisted to finish air-drying. When hair is dry, shake twists loose and beachy waves are yours!
For glam BIG beach curls we love this advice from The Sally Hershberger Downtown Salon stylist Allison Woodruff. While the style works best for medium to long lengths, shorter bobs can also pull it off. Use mousse on wet hair to prep (Allison likes Eufora Formation Whipped Styling Solution because it doesn't contain propane), work it through, then blow the hair smooth. Use a double barrel curling iron and curl the entire head. "Break up the curls using fingers and then finish with a finishing spray for frizz control and shine."
If you're not looking for big curls, just use a different size rod as Jon Steinick from BRAVO's Shear Genius Season 3 says, "the size of the desired wave depicts the size of the iron." Steinick also recommends applying a product before drying hair (he's a fan of Vain Mane), using double the suggested amount "to achieve a more stiff outcome," then blowing dry. Split hair into quadrants, from the center of the forehead to the nape of the neck, and then across from ear to ear. Using 2" sections and starting at the back of the head, curl each section in the opposite way of the last section so they alternate. When you're done, "lightly shake head and scrunch so they all blend together."
Not mentioned yet, but certainly a "go-to" when it comes to sultry waves are the texturizing sea salt sprays that make you look like you've spent the day relaxing in a chair with a good book and a good breeze, on of course, your favorite beach (Bumble and Bumble's Surf Spray is a god-send and my personal favorite). Lindsay De Los Santos from South Boston's SHAG says to spritz damp hair liberally with your favorite sea salt spray. "Braid hair loosely and let your hair dry naturally...you'll have beautiful, mermaid-like waves!"
Happy styling!
